Crossing Guard Program

The CPS Crossing Guard Program ensures student safety by placing dedicated, trained crossing guards at key intersections across the district during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

How Crossing Guards Keep Students Safe

Crossing guards serve as trusted safety leaders who assist children and families in safely navigating busy intersections, and discourage unsafe driving behaviors in active school zones.

  • Identifiable Presence: Crossing guards wear high-visibility safety vests and use standard traffic control equipment, including stop paddles and reflective gear.
  • Trained Community Members: Crossing guards are trained in district safety standards, traffic control laws, and emergency response procedures to protect students as they walk or bike to and from school.
  • District Collaboration: Working alongside the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and local school leaders, the program conducts regular traffic assessments to evaluate high-volume corridors, update pavement markings, and optimize intersection safety.
