Day 2

Your Family’s History

In the story, we learn about Marisol’s family’s history. Talk with your child about your family’s history, and show them the places important to your family on a map. If available, share pictures of your family members and discuss the special characteristics of each.

Supplies needed:

  • Device to look at online maps
  • Optional: family photos

Day 3

The Pieces of You

In the story, we learn about the many aspects of Marisol’s personality and family that help to inform her identity. Ask your child to identify the special parts of their personality and your family. Ask your child:

  • What are your favorite things to do?
  • What things make you feel proud?
  • What language(s) do you speak?
  • What foods do you like to eat?
  • What are your favorite books / tv shows / movies / games?

Invite your child to fill a blank piece of paper by drawing all of the special parts of their identity that you discuss. When your child is finished, cut the paper into 4-6 puzzle pieces. Each piece has some aspects of what makes your child special, but when you put the pieces back together, you make a full picture of all of the unique aspects of your child’s identity!

Supplies needed:

  • Blank Paper
  • Writing, Drawing, and/or Painting Materials (Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils, Paint, Paintbrushes)
  • Scissors

Day 4

Express and Dress Yourself!

In the story, Marisol loves to dress in ways that make her feel good and that express her personality, even if they don’t match! Invite your child to dress themselves today, in any way that they want to! As they dress, ask your child why each article of clothing makes them feel special and why they are choosing to wear it.

Supplies needed:

  • Your Child’s Clothing

Day 5

Kitchen Science

In the story, Marisol’s favorite meal is a peanut butter and jelly burrito! Invite your child into the kitchen with you, and encourage them to create their own special meal, just like Marisol’s! Encourage them to use any ingredients that are available, and encourage them to try out their creation at the end (and you can, too!). When they are finished creating their meal, invite them to write down the ingredient list and recipe instructions, and to share these with family members and friends. And, most importantly, have fun!

Supplies needed:

  • Blank Paper
  • Writing, Drawing, and/or Painting Materials (Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils, Paint, Paintbrushes)
  • Optional: device to communicate with family members and friends
