CHICAGO — As summer break begins, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is rolling out a slate of academic and enrichment programs to ensure students continue learning, thriving, and preparing for the 2025–26 school year. Through partnerships with community organizations and educational institutions citywide, CPS is once again supporting high-quality summer opportunities that reflect the District’s deep commitment to equity, excellence, and the goals outlined in its Five-Year Strategic Plan, Success 2029: Together We Rise.

"With our students reaching new heights—from record-breaking graduation rates and rising scholarship totals to expanded career pathways and stronger academic outcomes—our mission is clear: keep the momentum going,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “Summer is a critical window to keep students engaged, especially when learning loss is a risk. These programs make that transition into fall smoother, smarter, and more equitable.”

The last day of school is Thursday, June 12 and students will return to classes on Monday, Aug. 18. From Monday, June 23 through Friday, August 1, students in all grades will have access to academic enrichment, social-emotional support, and opportunities for exploration at hundreds of sites citywide. Key CPS summer programs include:

Summer of Algebra: Accelerated math instruction for rising high school students.

Summer Start: A bridge program to help incoming kindergarteners and first graders thrive.

Alumni Success Initiative: Post-graduation support to keep recent graduates on track for college and career.

JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge: A weeklong experience building leadership, teamwork, and resilience.

High School Connection: A transition program for rising ninth graders to build confidence and readiness.

Out of School Time (OST): Enrichment activities spanning academics, arts, sports, and more.
Work-Based Learning Internships: More than 1,400 students were placed in work-based learning internships with industry partners including Peoples' Gas, International Quantum Microelectric Park (IQMP), Rush University Medical Center, and Clayco, along with a new program featuring 100 students who will work with the District’s Capital Investment team.

Families can learn more and register by visiting the CPS website, or by contacting their school principal directly for site-specific details.

Expanding Access Through CPS Libraries
The CPS Libraries team plays a key role in supporting summer learning with robust digital and print resources, including:
A shared District-wide collection of more than 10,000 ebooks available to all students and staff.

Twelve universal digital subscription platforms—free and accessible both at school and at home.

A universal audiobook library tailored to support diverse learners and English Learners.

A centralized library catalog and circulation system supported by full-time technical assistance.

From algebra and audiobooks to college readiness and career exploration, CPS is ensuring that summer in Chicago is a time of opportunity, engagement, and preparation for a strong year ahead.

Summer programming takes many forms across the District. For example, students at John C. Coonley Elementary School in the Ravenswood neighborhood produce a weekly student-led news broadcast called, “Coonley News” which highlights school and community updates and will continue during the summer.

Beginning Tuesday, July 1, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry will host the RISE Program for students in grades 9 through 11. The program aims to build interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) through hands-on learning, civic engagement, and career exploration.

Later in July, CCC Intelligent Solutions will host the “Black Girls Code” Summer Camp, an initiative that introduces participants to artificial intelligence through machine learning and software development projects.

The District also maintains strong partnerships with city agencies. The Chicago Public Library, for example, will run its 2025 summer initiative, Growing Minds, Going Green, offering book clubs, gardening events, arts and crafts workshops, ice cream socials, and more. CPS also continues to collaborate with partners including the Chicago Park District, One Summer Chicago, and My CHI. My Future.

“Research shows that summer learning plays a crucial role in academic progress during the school year,” said CPS Literacy Director Dr. Jane Fleming. “The programs offered by CPS and our city partners consistently support student success and long-term outcomes after graduation.”
