COVID-19 Data for SY21-22

As we track the impact of COVID-19 at CPS, we’re sharing data about cases and testing to keep the public informed about how the pandemic is affecting the district and its community. The information below corresponds to the 2021-22 school year.

Reported Cases

Reported case counts represent all reported COVID-19 cases, including those that were recorded as a result of a test taken inside of a school and those self-reported outside of a school. Case counts are not a measure of transmission in schools and numerous studies have shown that schools are not sites of significant COVID-19 transmission.

September 30, 2021 Dashboard updates to support COVID-19 data transparency:

CPS is now publishing all reported cases of COVID-19 among District staff and students within the latest 24-hour reporting period. This will include cases where an investigation has not yet started or is in progress.  Because cases still under investigation may not be confirmed, case counts are dynamic and subject to change.

  • Prior to this update, data in both the district and school tabs below displayed only cases of COVID-19 when an investigation was closed.
  • Because we are expanding the criteria from closed cases to all reported cases, the number on the dashboard will experience a one-time spike. This increase should not be interpreted as evidence of an outbreak or increased spread.

“Close contacts” identified have been replaced with “Quarantined/Isolated” staff or students to better reflect the impact of COVID-19 on CPS schools. Quarantined/Isolated numbers are subject to change based on the investigation of open cases.

CPS will now be updating school-level data daily; previously, school-level data was updated weekly.

Quarantined/Isolated data will be made available at both the district and school levels with staff and student data broken out at the district level. Adult and student breakouts will not be available at school level in accordance with privacy laws.

  • Reporting of school level Quarantined/Isolated data is being processed and will be implemented into the dashboard by October 7, 2021.
  • All previous dates displaying “N/A” for Quarantined/Isolated data represent legacy data that is not reflective of the district’s new COVID-19 dashboard logic. All present and future dates in the updated dashboard will have Quarantined/Isolated data to report.

Information About Reporting and Terminology

  • Reported Cases: Reported cases represent all reported COVID-19 cases, including those that were recorded as a result of a test taken inside of a school and those self-reported outside of a school within the latest 24-hour reporting period.
  • Quarantined/Isolated: Quarantined/Isolated numbers include those individuals that are quarantined as well as those in isolation and are subject to change based on the investigation of open cases. Counts of Quarantined/Isolated individuals reflect daily totals for the specified day, counted at the indicated time. Individuals may be included in daily totals for multiple days. All individuals identified as close contacts are instructed to quarantine for 10 calendar days as required by the district and the Chicago Department of Public Health, except those who are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic. Individuals who are quarantined are excluded from CPS property. The movement of these individuals is restricted to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
  • Close Contact: Defined by the CDC as being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for 15 or more minutes within a 24-hour period during the individual’s contagious period, with or without a mask. In the classroom, close contact between students is defined as being within 3 feet for 15 or more minutes within a 24-hour period during the positive student’s contagious period, with or without a mask.
  • Please note that last year the district had a number of pod impacts. As our students have returned to five days a week of in-person education, pod data are no longer available.
