School starts in just over two weeks, and we’re busy getting everything ready to welcome students back to class!
This week, our school principals gathered with District leaders to reconnect, get excited, and talk about our shared vision for the year ahead!

CPS Budget Update
As we shared last week, the Chicago Board of Education passed an amended budget for the coming school year at their July 30 meeting. Since this budget includes $150 million in additional funding from the State of Illinois that has not been committed to CPS, securing short-term financing to ensure schools open on time has been a challenge.
Fortunately, thanks to a tremendous effort by our District’s budget team to partner with financial lenders this week, we are now feeling much more confident about our ability to make payroll and welcome students back to school beginning August 24.
At the same time we are working to secure this short-term financing, CPS is now working through how to implement the budget approved by the Board in ways that are in the best interest of our students and school communities. Our principals are a big part of these conversations, and our goal is to be as transparent as possible with our families and school communities as things move forward.
Last night, we held the first in a series of online webinars designed to update our school communities on what is happening with the budget. I want to thank everyone who attended, and hope that even more of you will join us for additional updates in the coming weeks. Information on dates and times for these virtual sessions will be shared with you via email once available, and will be posted to our website at cps.edu/budget.
Despite the unexpected developments with our budget, CPS is ready to start the school year strong, and we cannot wait to welcome our students back to class on August 24 and 25!

Celebrating Our Diversity with Festival Fun!
Again this year, CPS was excited to participate in Fiesta del Sol! This annual celebration of Latinx culture and creativity has been a summer tradition in Chicago for the past 53 years, and our District was honored to be a part of the festivities!
Don’t miss out on another Chicago back-to-school tradition—the Bud Billiken Parade. Join us for this community celebration tomorrow—Saturday, August 8—and look out for CPS in the parade.
We’re also excited to issue an Alumni Spirit Challenge to all CPS high school alumni to come out and represent your alma mater at the parade to prove which high school has the ultimate CPS legacy and bragging rights!

CPS Stories of the Week
Congratulations to the student musicians from Franklin Fine Arts Academy who performed at this year’s Lollapalooza! These students did not let the soggy conditions last weekend stop them from making their Chicago music festival debut!
Congrats also to the high school students who completed summer programming through My Brother’s Keeper, as well as those students who took part in summer internships in such areas as healthcare, finance, technology, and construction.
This is part of our District’s goal of exposing students to career paths that may uncover and fuel their unique interests and passions. We thank our District’s many partners, including Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, JP Morgan Chase, and others for uplifting our young people in this way, and hope that these experiences will help broaden their worldview as they continue to learn and grow!

Actualización sobre el presupuesto de CPS
Cómo indicamos la semana pasada, la Junta de Educación de Chicago aprobó en su reunión del 30 de julio un presupuesto para el próximo año escolar. Como este presupuesto incluye $150 millones en fondos adicionales del estado de Illinois que no han sido asignados a CPS, ha sido un reto asegurar financiamiento a corto plazo para asegurar que las escuelas abran a tiempo.

Celebrando nuestra diversidad en un ambiente de festival
Una vez más, CPS se complació en participar en Fiesta del Sol. ¡Esta celebración anual de la cultura y creatividad latinas ha sido una tradición de Chicago por 53 veranos, y nuestro Distrito se sintió halagado de formar parte de las festividades!
No se pierdan otra tradición de regreso a clases de Chicago: ¡el desfile Bud Billiken! Únansenos en esta celebración comunitaria mañana sábado, 8 de agosto, y busquen a CPS en el desfile.
¡También nos complace emitir un desafío a todos los egresados de escuela secundaria de CPS, para que salgan a representar a sus alma maters en el desfile para probar cuál escuela tiene el superior legado de CPS y el derecho a jactarse!

HISTORIAS DE LA SEMANA DE CPS
¡Felicitaciones a los músicos estudiantes de la Academia de Bellas Artes Franklin que participaron en Lollapalooza este año! ¡Estos estudiantes no permitieron que la mojada del fin de semana pasada impidiera que hiceran su debut en el festival de música de Chicago!
Feliciationes adicionales a los estudiantes de escuela secundaria que completaron la programación de verano por medio de My Brother’s Keeper además de aquellos de los estudiantes que tomaron parte en pasantías de verano en campos como la salud, la finanza, la tecnología y la construcción.
Esto forma parte de la meta de nuestro Distrito de exponer a estudiantes a recorridos profesionales que puedan clarificar e impulsar sus intereses y pasiones únicos. Agradecemos a los muchos colaboradores de nuestro Distrito, como el Hospital de Niños Ann and Robert H. Lurie, el centro médico de la Universidad Rush, JP Morgan Chase, y otros por elevar a nuestros jóvenes de tal manera, y esperamos que estas experiencias les ayuden a ampliar sus perspectivas mundiales a medida que continúen aprendiendo y creciendo.
