Information Regarding Transportation for the 2023–24 School Year

Dear CPS Families, 

As you may have seen in the news, our country is continuing to experience a severe bus driver shortage, and that shortage is directly affecting CPS heading into next school year. 

As of the writing of this letter, CPS has filled approximately half of the driver positions needed to provide transportation to all students who qualify for District-provided transportation. Furthermore, every year since 2019, the number of diverse learners served by CPS has increased, and transportation requests continue to be made throughout the school year.

In keeping with our commitment to prioritizing our most vulnerable students, and in alignment with policy approved by the Chicago Board of Education, the following groups will have transportation starting Monday, August 21, the first day of school:

• Students with diverse learning needs who qualify for transportation and have requested transportation.
• Students in Temporary Living Situations (STLS) who have requested transportation.
• General education students who attend the same school as a sibling who is a diverse learner or STLS student.

CPS will continue to work to minimize the amount of time that students spend traveling to and from school on CPS transportation. 

As of today, the following groups of students will NOT have transportation starting Monday, August 21, the first day of school:

• Diverse learners and STLS students who have accepted the up-to-$500 monthly stipend as an alternative to CPS-provided transportation.
• Diverse learners and STLS students who had not yet requested transportation by today’s date. This includes students who may have been assessed over the summer. These families can receive the up-to-$500 monthly stipend or request transportation from CPS. For transportation requests received between today's date and the first day of school, CPS will work to provide transportation services to these students within the first two weeks of school. Requests received after the first day of school will be routed on a rolling basis. Families will receive a stipend of $25 per day until the student is provided transportation services.
• General education students in magnet or selective programs. If CPS is successful in expanding transportation capacity, we may be able to add some of these students to routes. However, due to the bus driver shortage and our District’s commitment to serving students most in need of transportation, we will continue to prioritize transportation for diverse learners and STLS students.

For general education students in magnet or selective programs who qualify for CPS transportation, CPS is providing FREE Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Ventra cards valued at $35 per month for eligible students and a companion pass for one parent or guardian who may need to accompany the student on CTA. In order to receive a Ventra card, families must fill out this form no later than August 11. Accepting a Ventra card does not forfeit a family’s opportunity to receive CPS transportation services later in the year. The up-to-$500 monthly stipend provided to families of diverse learners and STLS students as an alternative to bus transportation is not available to general education students.

Ventra cards and companion passes will be available for pick-up from the designated transportation coordinator at your student’s school when the school year begins. And as has been tradition recently, all CPS students will enjoy free transportation on CTA for the first day of school, Monday, August 21. We regret any inconvenience that this transportation situation may cause your family. Please know that we are committed to allocating our current resources equitably, and we are working extremely hard to accommodate as many students as possible given the national bus driver shortage.

Estimadas familias de las CPS:

Como habrán visto en los noticieros, el país continúa experimentando una seria escasez de choferes de autobús, y esta escasez afecta directamente a las CPS según nos acercamos al año escolar entrante. 

Al momento de redactarse esta carta, las CPS han ocupado aproximadamente la mitad de los puestos de conductor necesarios para brindar transporte a todos los estudiantes que califiquen para transporte brindado por el distrito. Además, la cantidad de aprendices diversos atendidos por las CPS ha aumentado cada año a partir del 2019, y se continúa haciendo solicitudes de transporte durante todo el año escolar.

En consonancia con nuestro compromiso con darle prioridad a nuestros estudiantes más vulnerables y la política ratificada por la Junta de Educación de Chicago, los siguientes grupos tendrán transporte a partir del primer día de clases, el lunes, 21 de agosto: 

• Los estudiantes con necesidades de aprendizaje diversas que califiquen para recibir transporte y lo hayan solicitado.
• Los estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales (designados como STLS, según sus siglas en inglés) que califiquen para transporte y lo hayan solicitado.
• Los estudiantes de educación general que sean hermanos de aprendices diversos o de estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales y asistan a la misma escuela que estos. 

Las CPS continuarán trabajando para minimizar la duración de los viajes de ida y de vuelta a las escuelas en transportes de las CPS.

Al día de hoy, los siguientes grupos de estudiantes actualmente NO tendrán transporte el siguiente año escolar, a partir del primer día de clase, el lunes, 21 de agosto: 

• Los aprendices diversos y los estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales que hayan aceptado el estipendio de hasta $500 mensuales como una alternativa al transporte brindado por las CPS. 
• Los aprendices diversos y los estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales que no hayan solicitado transporte al día de hoy. Esto incluye a los estudiantes que puedan haber sido evaluados durante el verano. Estas familias podrán recibir el estipendio de hasta $500 mensuales o solicitar transporte a las CPS. Para las solicitudes de transporte que se reciban entre la fecha de hoy y el primer día de clases, las CPS trabajarán para brindarles servicios de transporte a estos estudiantes a las dos semanas de haber comenzado las clases. Las solicitudes recibidas después del primer día de clases resultarán en asignaciones de rutas de manera continua. Las familias recibirán un estipendio de $25 por día hasta que se le brinde servicios de transporte a su estudiante que califique.
• Los estudiantes de educación general en programas magnet o selectivos. Si las CPS logran expandir la capacidad de transporte, es posible que podamos añadir a algunos de estos estudiantes a las rutas. Sin embargo, debido a la escasez de conductores de autobuses y el compromiso de nuestro distrito con servir a los estudiantes que más necesiten transporte, continuaremos priorizando el transporte para los aprendices diversos y los estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales. 

Para los estudiantes de educación general en programas magnet o selectivos que califiquen para recibir transporte de las CPS, las CPS ofrecerán cada mes, y LIBRE DE COSTO, tarjetas Ventra de la Autoridad de Tránsito de Chicago (CTA, según sus siglas en inglés) valoradas en $35; también ofrecerán un pase de acompañante por familia para los padres o tutores que necesiten acompañar a su estudiante en la CTA. Para poder recibir una tarjeta Ventra, las familias deberán llenar este formulario no más tarde del 11 de agosto. El aceptar una tarjeta Ventra no implica una renuncia a la oportunidad de recibir servicios de transporte de las CPS más tarde en el año. El estipendio de hasta $500 mensuales que se les ofrece a las familias de los aprendices diversos y de los estudiantes en situaciones de viviendas temporales como alternativa al transporte en autobús no está disponible a los estudiantes de educación general. 

Al comienzo del año escolar, las tarjetas Ventra y los pases de acompañamiento estarán disponibles para ser recogidos en la escuela de cada estudiante; estas serán distribuidas por los coordinadores de transporte de cada escuela. Como se ha hecho la tradición en años recientes, todo estudiante de las CPS gozará de transporte gratis en la CTA el primer día de clases, el lunes, 21 de agosto. Lamentamos cualquier inconveniente que esta situación de transporte les pueda causar a sus familias.
