COVID-19 Data for SY20-21

As we track the impact of COVID-19 at CPS, we’re sharing data about cases and testing to keep the public informed about how the pandemic is affecting the district and its community. The information below corresponds to the 2020-21 school year, which included remote learning and school reopening.

Actionable Cases

This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.

Actionable case counts represent the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases associated with CPS buildings. Case counts are not a measure of transmission in schools and numerous studies have shown that schools are not sites of significant COVID-19 transmission.

Information About Reporting and Terminology

  • Number of Cases Reflected: Some cases involve individuals who were present in multiple schools. In those cases, the individual is reflected in each school visited where there were close contacts. For that reason, the total number of individuals who tested positive will not match the school-by-school totals in this chart.
  • Administration: Cases under “administration” include cases at any non-school based CPS location.
  • Close Contact: A close contact is defined by the CDC as being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for 15 or more minutes within a 24-hour period during the individual’s contagious period, with or without a mask. All individuals identified as close contacts are instructed to quarantine for 14 calendar days as required by the district and the Chicago Department of Public Health.
  • Pods: Under the district’s reopening plan, students and educators are grouped into pods, or small class sizes of approximately 15 students, to minimize exposure to other students, allow for social distancing, and support contact tracing.
  • Data Entry & Case Confirmation: The data represents new confirmed self-reported, actionable cases and associated actions for the corresponding time period. If a pod was quarantined during the week of 1/10, it is only reflected in that week’s data. Data corresponds with the dates of confirmation of the self-reported case and subsequent notification to the school community, not when an individual began reporting symptoms.
  • Actionable Cases: This data only includes people who were present in CPS buildings during the contagious period.
  • Child or Adult Cases: Due to privacy laws, child and adult case totals are aggregated and are not broken out at the school level.
  • Data Collection Range: Close Contact Quarantine data and Pods in Quarantine data is only available since 1/3/21 and is listed as “N/A” in the Actionable Cases table.

Staff Surveillance Testing

This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.

During the 2020-21 school year CPS, implemented a voluntary COVID-19 surveillance testing program for school-based staff. Surveillance testing is used to measure and monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 among asymptomatic staff in our schools. On a weekly basis, 25 percent of staff were tested, and all staff were instructed to expect to be offered testing at least once per month.

Our surveillance testing program adds an additional tool to the strict health protocols we've put in place to help the district make informed decisions about keeping staff and students healthy. Learn more about the district’s surveillance testing strategy and find answers to frequently asked questions in the COVID-19 Testing Handbook.

  • Total Test Administered: The total number of staff screened through the COVID Testing Protocol.
  • Schools Visited: The total number of times that the COVID Testing Protocol was administered at schools on a certain day.
  • Presumed Positive: The number of rapid antigen tests where the outcome required a PCR confirmatory test to be performed. Staff members who are presumed positive are immediately offered a PCR test for a diagnostic result to be given. Confirmed positive cases are updated weekly and are reflected in the Actionable Reported Cases graphics above.
  • Absent staff: The number of staff members who were designated to be tested on a certain day but were not because they did not attend work.
  • Refused Test: The number of staff who were offered a test and declined.
  • Note: To ensure surveillance testing data is accurate, we employ an ongoing manual validation process that may result in slight changes to data from previous days.

Student COVID-19 Screening Testing

This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.

During the 202-21 school year, CPS implemented a voluntary COVID-19 screening program for students age 10 and up who attend special education cluster programs or who attend schools in the 10 zip codes with the highest COVID-19 rates. Those zip codes were updated monthly, based on data from the Chicago Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 Dashboard. All students under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian consent prior to being tested.

Screening testing is used to measure and monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 among asymptomatic students in our schools. On a weekly basis, 25 percent of students at each eligible school were randomly selected for testing. Both positive and negative results were shared with parents or guardians within 72 hours. All positive results were shared with the district for contact tracing. Positive results are reflected in the actionable table above.

School Readiness

To ensure CPS was prepared for the safe return of students and staff, we collected and shared data on school readiness for reopening. This information corresponds to the 2020-21 school year and is no longer being updated. Refer to the COVID-19 Data for SY21-22 page for new information.
