Supporting Students After Memphis Officers Charged in Death of Tyre Nichols

Dear CPS Families, 

Yesterday, five former Memphis police officers were indicted on murder charges in the death of Tyre Nichols, and video footage of the traffic stop is expected to be released this evening. We know that this news is raising a lot of pain and concern for our communities, especially our communities of color, and we are here to support our students and to help them process this news.

It is our goal to make sure school is a safe space for our students to ask questions, express their feelings freely, process trauma, and have productive conversations about difficult topics. To support our schools and create these safe spaces, we have shared the below resources with our educators, and we want to share them with you as well:

• The Day After: Classroom discourse guide for a timely response to difficult or controversial topics.
• Say Their Names: A toolkit to help foster productive conversations about race and civil disobedience.

We encourage you to use these resources to guide your own discussions with your children about difficult topics like these.

If your child is struggling with this news, please reach out to their teacher, counselor, or another trusted adult at their school. Our CPS staff will be ready to connect them with any extra support they need, including mental health support. We will continue to do everything we can to support our school communities in the wake of this tragic news.
