End of Week Message: A Blueprint for our District’s Future

Dear CPS Families, Colleagues, and Supporters, 

After months of collaboration with our families, educators, and community partners, I’m excited to share that CPS has now released our Three-Year Blueprint. This Blueprint is our District’s call to action: a plan to support students academically, socially, and emotionally as we recover from the pandemic, and to do the important long-term work of closing opportunity gaps and eliminating barriers to student success.

The Blueprint is divided into two key sections — Recommitments and Reimagining.

Recommitments: These are the strategies CPS is using to help students recover ground lost during the pandemic and ensure our schools continue thriving this year. Our three areas of recommitment are Academic Progress, Operational Excellence, and Building Trust.

Our goals within Academic Progress include:

  • Expanding Skyline - our universal online curriculum that provides students with equitable access to a curriculum that is academically rigorous and true to who they are as individuals;
  • A commitment to universal pre-k, and a laser focus on foundational early literacy programming that will help our children become proficient readers at an early age;
  • An emphasis on small class sizes, robust social-emotional learning interventions, and comprehensive out-of-school-time and summer programming;
  • A keen focus on recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse, high-quality workforce, and
  • Ensuring that policies and resources are in place at every school to make sure students feel safe, healthy, and supported.

Our priorities for Operational Excellence are:

  • Investing in facilities that provide all students with safe, clean, high-quality learning environments;
  • Nutritionally balanced breakfast and lunch options for all students;
  • Reliable transportation services for all eligible students; and   
  • An equitable distribution of resources, with priority going to those school communities that are most in need.

Finally, our goals for Building Trust with our families and school communities include:

  • Improving transparency and building inclusive partnerships that embrace parents and community members as partners in our shared mission; and 
  • Honoring the lived experiences of our families and staff and giving them the space they need to share their input. 

Reimagining: This section of the Blueprint outlines our plan for tackling long-standing opportunity gaps and addressing other persistent challenges in our District. This is the most exciting aspect of the Blueprint, because it’s our opportunity to work directly with our communities to reimagine what is possible for CPS.

The work is already underway; I want to thank all of the educators, families, and community partners who have contributed to this reimagining work thus far, and who have helped CPS identify the focus areas that are most important to them:

  • Improve our approach to accountability to account for historical and systemic inequity while providing stakeholders with the information they need.
  • Redesign our admissions and enrollment policies and processes to ensure that they are responsive, accessible, and equitable for all families.
  • Intentionally involve stakeholders as inclusive partners in reinvesting in and planning for the future of schools in their community.
  • Design responsive programming and school models specifically for students who are furthest from educational opportunities.
  • Provide career readiness and preparation to all students in grades 6–12 through career awareness and exploration, real-world learning, and early college opportunities.
  • Serve students with diverse learning needs to ensure that all students access positive, inclusive, and rewarding academic and extra-curricular experiences.
  • Design a continuous, connected system of pre-k–2 early literacy supports, and partner with families to ensure that every child is a proficient reader by third grade.
  • Ensure that all students develop spoken and written proficiency in a second language.
  • Ensure grading policies, procedures, and practices are consistent, equitable, and transparent.
  • Elevate Out-of-School Time and summer programming as a critical extension of the school day and year, offering all students responsive and engaging experiences.

Some of this reimagining will require bold new ideas and major system wide changes, while other aspects will mean making simple but impactful adjustments to our current practices. But all have the potential to dramatically improve the experience of CPS students Districtwide.

I urge everyone to explore the Blueprint at cps.edu/blueprint to learn more about our District’s strategic approach. Most importantly, at the bottom of every Blueprint page, you’ll find a section called “Getting Involved” which links to a form where school community members can contribute to this important work. 

We know that solutions cannot be dictated from the top down; they must be grown from the bottom up. And we can only arrive at the best solutions by hearing the voices of those who are most impacted. Take Five with Estela Beltran: Secretary to the Board of Education

Take Five is a series that highlights some of the many CPS staff members who are going above and beyond for our schools. If you know someone who is making a difference, nominate them to be featured here. 

This week, we are thrilled to feature Estela Beltran, the longtime Secretary to the Chicago Board of Education and a beloved member of the Board Office. Estela is set to retire at the end of February after almost 37 total years at CPS, and 21 in her current role as Secretary to the Board.

“Throughout her many years with CPS, Estela has been a constant source of support, knowledge, and professionalism," said Miguel del Valle, President of the Chicago Board of Education. "She has been a cornerstone of the Board Office, and her intelligence, kindness, and huge wealth of institutional knowledge will not be forgotten. We are all incredibly grateful for her service.”

A Curie High School graduate, Estela first started working for CPS as a clerk trainee in 1986 after earning her associate’s degree from Daley College. Her original plan was to work for a little while, save some money, and go back to school. However, once she started working and gaining more knowledge and experience, she decided to stay at CPS and learn as much as possible. For the next decade, Estela immersed herself in the large and complex world of education policy. She joined the Board Office in 1996 and worked as the staff assistant and assistant secretary before being promoted to the Secretary of the Board in 2002, which is the position she has held ever since.

For over twenty years, Estela has been crucial to the facilitation and success of the District’s monthly Board meetings and public hearings, and she can count on one hand the number of times she has had to miss a meeting. In addition to facilitating the meetings themselves, she does a vast amount of preparation work and helps organize and support her colleagues in the Board Office.

“Estela is like a walking Wikipedia of CPS- and Board-related documents,” said Susan Narrajos, Assistant Secretary to the Board. “When people say that Estela possesses tremendous institutional knowledge, I agree, yes she does. But not only does she have the institutional knowledge, Estela is the institutional knowledge.”

How do you approach your work?

I've always tried to be humble, kind, and patient. My door is almost always open, and I really prioritize support and open communication. Even in situations that have been difficult to navigate, I have always tried to be true to myself and uphold the integrity of my work. 

What is your favorite part of your role?

I am in charge of so many different tasks as a part of my work; every month is like I am putting this huge puzzle together. I really love the logistics of making sure everything is taken care of, in order, and ready to go.

What are some of the most exciting changes you've seen in the District during your time here?

I feel blessed to have seen so many good things happen throughout my time. All of the progress we have made in terms of stakeholder engagement is really exciting, and our accountability redesign process is unprecedented. Community and student voice is so important, and it’s been amazing to watch how much community engagement impacts the decisions and investments CPS is making. I also always love seeing the amount of scholarships our students earn, and knowing that those funds will help support them so they can continue to thrive.

How are you feeling about your upcoming retirement? 

Excited, but it’s bittersweet. It’s totally surreal that I’ve been here for so long, and I’m just trying to breathe and enjoy the moment. When I reflect back on my career, I feel happy and content with what I've done and what I've contributed to the Chicago Board of Education and CPS. I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my life, and to everything I’ll be able to do once I have more time.

What are you most looking forward to in retirement?

Being able to travel. There's so much to see and so much to do. I would love to take a trip to Scotland and Ireland in the near future, and I’m really looking forward to not worrying about needing to take time off. I’m really close with my family, and I will definitely be spending more quality time with them. I also want to volunteer; I grew up watching both of my parents helping others, and it’s really important to me to give back.

Introducing CPS’ New Chief Health Officer

CPS is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Sofia Adawy Akintunde as the District’s new Chief Health Officer. She is a dedicated public servant who brings more than a decade of experience in public health to her role with CPS, which will be to support District leadership and serve as the leader of the Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW). Dr. Adawy Akintunde holds a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, where she also completed the Scholars for Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellowship. Dr. Adawy Akintunde also completed the Midwest Fellowship for Primary Care Champions in 2021 and was conferred the degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2022.

Student and Staff Spotlights 

We’re continuing to celebrate the 84 Posse Scholars who are part of the District’s Class of 2023, including Michael, the first-ever Posse Scholar from Englewood STEM High School. Michael believes that his time at Englewood STEM has prepared him well for the future through the rigorous academic opportunities it offers. Outside of the classroom, Michael’s passion is acting, and he’s planning on growing his skill set by studying theater at Pomona College next year. 

And we’re also extremely proud of the new staff members who have made it past the halfway point of their first year working for CPS. At Rogers Elementary School, Mr. Odi Audisho has thoroughly enjoyed his first year as a special education teacher. Above anything else, this year has taught him to expect the unexpected because the needs of every student are different. He now fully understands that it’s important to tailor your approach as an educator to meet each student where they are. 

A Look Around the District

Lots of exciting events and accomplishments have been taking place at schools across the city! Chicago Academy High School recently held a talent show to celebrate its students’ unique skills. It included singing, dancing, and even a live band! Students at Clark Elementary School have been having a blast participating in their school’s daily morning show, which gives them an opportunity to share school news and learn more about broadcasting. 

The school community at Carver Elementary School has a big reason to celebrate as well. Thanks to a partnership that brings the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to the school, Carver has seen great progress in helping students receive physicals and required immunizations. And William H. Brown STEM Academy could not be prouder of its eighth-grade student, Cesar, who recently became the youngest member of the Chicago Park District Athlete Leadership Council!

Finally, we have to give two shout-outs related to our sports programs. First, we’re recognizing Ms. Murakami, a third-grade teacher at Jamieson Elementary School. When one of the school’s boys soccer teams needed a coach, she stepped up despite not knowing much about coaching or soccer. Her efforts led to the team winning a championship! And we’re also sending a big congratulations to Simeon Career Academy, where boys basketball coach  Robert Smith recently earned his 500th career win. 

Help Our District Re-Engage Disconnected Youth 

CPS has an important new initiative, Back to Our Future (B2OF), that focuses on getting students who have been disengaged from CPS or have a history of frequent absenteeism back into the classroom and back on track academically. Through resources such as workforce development training, mentorship, and mental health and trauma support, B2OF meets students where they are and empowers them to return to and succeed in an educational setting. Attend Tomorrow’s Forum on Asylum Seekers in Chicago

Since August 31, 2022, the City of Chicago has welcomed thousands of asylum seekers from the southern border. On Saturday, January 28, the Office of Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, community partners, and other City officials will host a virtual briefing about the current situation, the city’s response, and ways to support. This virtual forum will be held from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Register here to participate in this forum via Zoom, or tune in on Facebook by visiting the Mayor’s Office of Community Engagement page here.  

Apply to Serve as an Academic Decathlon Judge

CPS is currently looking for individuals to serve as judges for the speech and interview section of its Academic Decathlon. This event will be taking place at Whitney Young Magnet High School (211 S Laflin St, Chicago, IL 60607) on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you are interested, please reference the instructions at the top of this form and complete the form by Friday, February 3. 

Update on the District’s Accountability Redesign Initiative 

The CPS Accountability Redesign Initiative is our District’s effort to develop a new approach to school quality that promotes equity and academic excellence in our schools. It is entering its final phase of stakeholder engagement to garner feedback ahead of a planned April 2023 Board vote on this new approach. We encourage you to review an overview of the initiative (English | Spanish) and register here to receive updates on how you can share your thoughts on the proposed approach and review the stakeholder engagement that has occurred so far. 

Spring Visual Art Opportunities for CPS Students

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEB. 17: Submissions Open for Multidisciplinary Arts Festival

Submissions are now open for PERFORMANCE SLOTS in the first ever RE*VER*BER*ATE, a free multidisciplinary arts festival for the CPS community in downtown Chicago on April 27–30, 2023. To be considered, submit your performance here now through February 17!

This four-day event is open to all CPS students, including those from charter, contract, and options schools. The event will provide students in grades pre-k–12 with exhibition and performance opportunities and workshops, portfolio reviews and audition workshops, Fine and Performing Arts high school fairs, and college and career connections. 

There will be several stages and public spaces that will be programmed with the aim to provide the widest possible representation of CPS student performances.

Después de meses de colaboración con nuestras familias, educadores y colaboradores comunitarios, me complace compartir que las CPS han publicado nuestro Plan de tres años. Este plan es el llamado a la acción de nuestro distrito: un plan para respaldar a los estudiantes académica, social y emocionalmente mientras nos recuperamos de la pandemia y para hacer la importante labor de largo plazo de cerrar las brechas de oportunidad y eliminar las barreras al éxito estudiantil.  

El Plan se divide en dos partes principales: Compromisos renovados y Reinvención. 

Compromisos renovados: estas son las estrategias que utilizan las CPS para ayudar a los estudiantes a recobrar el progreso que se perdió durante la pandemia y asegurar que nuestras escuelas continúen floreciendo este año. Nuestras tres áreas de compromiso renovado son el progreso académico, la excelencia operacional y la creación de confianza.  

Nuestras metas en cuanto al progreso académico incluyen:

  • expandir Skyline, nuestro currículo digital universal que les brinda a los estudiantes acceso equitativo a un currículo académicamente riguroso y fiel a quienes son como individuos; 
  • un compromiso con el prekínder universal y un enfoque directo en la programación de alfabetización temprana fundacional que ayudará a nuestros niños a convertirse en lectores proficientes desde una temprana edad;
  • un énfasis en clases de tamaño pequeño, robustas intervenciones de aprendizaje socioemocional, y programación extracurricular y de verano íntegras;
  • un fuerte enfoque en el reclutamiento, el desarrollo y la retención de una fuerza trabajadora de calidad y 
  • asegurarnos de que las políticas y los recursos estén implementados en cada escuela para asegurar que los estudiantes se sientan seguros, saludables y respaldados.  

Nuestras prioridades para la excelencia operacional son:

  • invertir en facilidades que brinden a todos los estudiantes ambientes de aprendizaje seguros, limpios y de alta calidad; 
  • opciones de desayuno y almuerzo nutricionalmente balanceados para todos los estudiantes;
  • servicios de transporte confiables para todos los estudiantes elegibles y
  • una distribución equitativa de recursos, dando prioridad a las comunidades escolares más necesitadas.  

Finalmente, nuestras metas para crear confianza con nuestras familias y comunidades escolares incluyen:

Esta es la parte más emocionante de nuestro Plan, porque es nuestra oportunidad para trabajar directamente con nuestras comunidades para reimaginar lo que es posible para las CPS.  

La labor ya está en camino, y quiero agradecer a todos los educadores, las familias y los colaboradores comunitarios que han contribuido a la reinvención que se ha hecho hasta ahora y ayudado a las CPS a investigar las áreas de enfoque que son más importantes para ellos:  

  • mejorar nuestro enfoque a la responsabilidad para considerar las desigualdades históricas y sistémicas a la vez que les brindamos a las partes interesadas la información que necesitan; 
  • rediseñar nuestras políticas y procesos de admisiones y matrículas para asegurar que sean responsivos, accesibles y equitativos para todas las familias;
  • intencionalmente involucrar a las partes interesadas como colaboradoras inclusivas en la reinversión y planificación del futuro de las escuelas en sus comunidades;
  • diseñar programación responsiva y modelos escolares específicamente para estudiantes que estén más lejos de las oportunidades educativas; 
  • brindar preparación profesional a todos los estudiantes de sexto a duodécimo grado por medio de concientización y exploración profesionales, aprendizaje cónsono con el mundo real y oportunidades preuniversitarias;
  • servir a los estudiantes con necesidades de aprendizaje diversas para asegurar que todos los estudiantes puedan obtener experiencias académicas y extracurriculares positivas, inclusivas y satisfactorias; 
  • diseñar un sistema continuo y conectado de respaldos de alfabetización de prekínder a segundo grado y colaborar con familias para asegurar que cada niño sea lector proficiente para el tercer grado; 
  • asegurar que todos los estudiantes desarrollen destrezas en las comunicaciones orales y escritas en un segundo idioma; y
  • elevar la programación extracurricular y de verano como extensión crítica del día y el año escolares, ofreciendo a todos los estudiantes experiencias responsivas e interesantes. 

Partes de esta reinvención requerirán ideas novedosas y audaces, y grandes cambios a nivel de sistema, mientras que otros aspectos implicarán hacer ajustes simples pero impactantes a nuestras prácticas actuales. Pero todos tienen el potencial para mejorar dramáticamente la experiencia de los estudiantes de las CPS a nivel de distrito.  

Exhorto a todos a explorar el Plan en cps.edu/blueprint para saber más del enfoque estratégico de nuestro Distrito. Más importante, al fondo de cada página del Plan, encontrarán una sección llamada “Involucrado” que lleva a un formulario en el cual los miembros de la comunidad escolar pueden contribuir a esta importante labor.  

Sabemos que las soluciones no pueden ser dictadas de arriba a abajo: deben ser cultivadas de abajo a arriba. Solo podemos llegar a las mejores soluciones escuchando las voces de aquellos que han sido los más impactados. Una de nuestras metas para el 2023 es resaltar más de las cosas fantásticas que ocurren cada día en nuestras escuelas, junto a las personas que las llevan a cabo.  No hay mejor fuente para estas buenas noticias que ustedes —los miembros de nuestras comunidades— y por lo tanto esperamos que consideren compartir sus historias por medio de este breve formulario.

Algunos temas para considerar: 

  • ¿Qué eventos está planeando su escuela para conmemorar el Mes de la Historia Negra este febrero?
  • La Semana Nacional de Consejería Escolar comienza el 6 de febrero. ¿Conoce a algún consejero que merezca reconocimiento?
  • ¿Ha recibido su escuela un premio del que deberíamos saber?
  • ¿Hay un estudiante, maestro u otro miembro del personal o la comunidad que merezca reconocimiento especial por sus acciones o logros?

Cinco preguntas a Estela Beltrán, secretaria de la Junta de Educación

Cinco preguntas es una serie que resalta a algunos de los muchos miembros del personal de las CPS que van más allá por nuestras escuelas. Si conoce a alguna persona que esté haciendo una diferencia, nomínela para que aparezca aquí (formulario en inglés). 

Esta semana nos entusiasma destacar a Estela Beltrán, que por mucho tiempo ha ejercido como la secretaria de la Junta de Educación de Chicago y una miembro muy querida de la Oficina de la Junta. Estela se jubila al final de febrero, después de casi 37 años con las CPS y 21 años en su puesto actual como secretaria de la Junta.  

“Durante sus muchos años con las CPS, Estela ha sido una fuente constante de apoyo, conocimiento y profesionalismo”, dijo Miguel del Valle, presidente de la Junta de Educación de Chicago. “Ella ha sido una parte fundamental de la Oficina de la Junta, y su inteligencia, bondad y gran conocimiento institucional no serán olvidados. Todos estamos increíblemente agradecidos por su servicio”.  

Una egresada de la Escuela Secundaria Curie, Estela comenzó a trabajar para las CPS como aprendiz de oficinista en el 1986, después de haber obtenido su grado asociado de la Universidad Daley. Su plan original era trabajar por un poco de tiempo, ahorrar dinero y regresar a la escuela. Sin embargo, una vez comenzó a trabajar y obtener más conocimiento y experiencia, decidió permanecer en las CPS y aprender lo más posible. Durante la siguiente década, Estela se sumergió en el grande y complejo mundo de la política de educación. Se unió a la Oficina de la Junta en el 1996 y ejerció como asistente de personal y subsecretaria antes de ser promovida al puesto de secretaria de la Junta en el 2002, que ha sido su posición desde entonces. 

Por más de veinte años, Estela ha sido crucial para la facilitación y el éxito de las reuniones mensuales de la Junta y las audiencias públicas del Distrito, y puede contar en una mano el número de veces que ha tenido que ausentarse de una reunión. Además de facilitar las reuniones mismas, hace una gran cantidad de preparación y ayuda a organizar y respaldar a sus colegas en la Oficina de la Junta.  

“Estela es como una Wikipedia ambulante de documentos relacionados a las CPS y la Junta”, dijo Susan Narrajos, subsecretaria de la Junta. “Cuando la gente dice que Estela posee tremendo conocimiento institucional, yo concuerdo: realmente lo posee. Pero más que poseer el conocimiento institucional, Estela es el conocimiento institucional”.

¿Cuál es tu enfoque en cuanto a tu trabajo?

Siempre he intentado ser humilde, bondadosa y paciente. Mi puerta casi siempre está abierta, y realmente doy prioridad al respaldo y la comunicación abierta. Aún en situaciones que han sido difíciles de navegar, siempre he intentado ser fiel a mí misma y mantener la integridad de mi trabajo.  

¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de tu puesto?

Estoy a cargo de tantas cosas distintas como parte de mi trabajo; cada mes es como si estuviera armando este gran rompecabezas. Realmente me encantan las logísticas de asegurarse de que todo esté cubierto, en orden y listo.  

¿Cuáles son los cambios más emocionantes que has visto en el Distrito durante tu tiempo aquí?

Me siento bendecida de haber visto tantas cosas buenas ocurrir durante mi permanencia. Todo el progreso que hemos hecho en cuanto a la participación de las partes interesadas es muy emocionante, y nuestro proceso de rediseño de responsabilidad no tiene precedentes. Las voces de la comunidad y los estudiantes son tan importantes, y ha sido asombroso ver cuanto la participación comunitaria impacta las decisiones y las inversiones que hacen las CPS. También me encanta ver la cantidad de becas que ganan nuestros estudiantes y saber que estos fondos ayudarán a respaldarlos para que puedan continuar floreciendo.

¿Cómo te hace sentir tu jubilación futura?  

Es emocionante pero agridulce. Es tan irreal que haya estado aquí tanto tiempo, y solo estoy tratando de respirar y disfrutar del presente. Cuando reflexiono sobre mi carrera, me siento feliz y satisfecha con lo que he hecho y lo que he contribuido a la Junta de Educación de Chicago y las CPS. Espero con entusiasmo el próximo capítulo de mi vida y todo lo que podré hacer cuando tenga más tiempo.  

¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma de estar jubilada?

Poder viajar. Hay tanto que ver y hacer. Me encantaría viajar a Escocia e Irlanda en el futuro cercano, y realmente me entusiasma no preocuparme de tener que tomar tiempo libre. Soy muy cercana a mi familia, y definitivamente estaré pasando más tiempo con ella. También quiero hacer voluntariado; crecí viendo a ambos de mis padres ayudar a otros, y es muy importante para mí dar algo de vuelta. 

Presentando a la nueva directora de salud de las CPS

Las CPS se complacen en anunciar el nombramiento de la Dra. Sofia Adawy Akintunde como la nueva directora de salud del Distrito. Ella es una servidora pública dedicada que trae más de una década de experiencia en la salud pública a su puesto, que utilizará para respaldar el liderazgo del Distrito y ejercer como la líder de la Oficina de Salud y Bienestar Estudiantil (OSHW, según sus siglas en inglés). La Dra. Awady Akintunde tiene un doctorado de Medicina de la Universidad de Illinois en la Escuela de Medicina de Chicago, donde también completó la beca Scholars for Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellowship. También completó la beca Midwest Fellowship for Primary Care Champions en 2021 y fue conferida el grado de becaria de la Academia Estadounidense de Médicos Generalistas en 2022.

Estudiantes y personal destacados 

Continuamos nuestra celebración de los 84 académicos Posse que forman parte de la clase del 2023 del Distrito, que incluyen a Michael, el primer académico Posse de la Escuela Secundaria de CTIM Englewood. Michael considera que su tiempo en Englewood lo ha preparado bien para el futuro gracias a las oportunidades académicas rigurosas que ofrece. Fuera del aula, la pasión de Michael es la actuación, y planea desarrollar esta destreza estudiando en la Universidad Pomona el año que viene.

También estamos extremadamente orgullosos de los nuevos miembros del personal que han llegado a la mitad de su primer año con las CPS. En la Escuela Primaria Rogers, Odi Audisho ha disfrutado profundamente su primer año como maestro de educación especial. Más que nada, este año le ha enseñado a esperar lo inesperado, ya que las necesidades de cada estudiante son distintas. Ahora comprende cabalmente que es importante adaptar su enfoque como educador a las circunstancias específicas de cada estudiante.  

Una mirada por el Distrito 

¡Que muchos eventos y logros excitantes han estado ocurriendo en las escuelas de la ciudad! La Escuela Secundaria Chicago Academy recientemente organizó un espectáculo de talento para celebrar las destrezas únicas de su estudiantado. Incluyó canto, bailes ¡y hasta una banda en vivo! Los estudiantes en la Escuela Primaria Clark han estado pasándola de primera participando en su programa mañanero diario, que les da una oportunidad de compartir noticias de la escuela y aprender más sobre la radiodifusión. 

La comunidad escolar de la Escuela Primaria Carver también tiene una gran razón para celebrar: gracias a una colaboración que trae el Ronald McDonald Care Mobile a la escuela, Carver ha visto gran progreso en ayudar a los estudiantes a recibir exámenes físicos e inmunizaciones requeridas. Y la Academia de CTIM William H. Brown no podría estar más orgullosa de su estudiante de octavo grado, César, que recientemente se convirtió en el miembro más joven del Consejo de Liderazgo de Atletas del Distrito de Parques de Chicago.

Finalmente, tenemos dos felicitaciones que hacer relacionadas a nuestros programas deportivos. Primero, queremos reconocer a la Sra. Murakami, maestra de tercer grado en la Escuela Primaria Jamieson. Cuando uno de los equipos de fútbol de niños de la escuela necesitaba un entrenador, ella se ofreció a pesar de no saber mucho de entrenamiento o fútbol. ¡Sus esfuerzos llevaron a que el equipo ganara un campeonato! También damos grandes felicitaciones a la Academia Profesional Simeón, donde el entrenador de baloncesto de niños Robert Smith recientemente obtuvo la victoria número 500 de su carrera.  

Ayude a nuestro distrito a recapturar el interés de la juventud desconectada  

Las CPS tienen una nueva e importante iniciativa, Back to Our Future (B2OF), enfocada en lograr que los estudiantes que se hayan desconectado de las CPS o tengan un historial de ausentismo frecuente regresen a las aulas y estén una vez más en el camino del éxito académico. A través de recursos tales como el entrenamiento profesional, la tutoría y respaldos de salud mental y trauma, B2OF responde a las necesidades particulares de los estudiantes y los capacita a regresar y tener éxito en el ámbito académico. Asista al foro de mañana sobre los buscadores de asilo en Chicago

Desde el 31 de agosto de 2022, la Ciudad de Chicago les ha dado la bienvenida a miles de buscadores de asilo de la frontera sureña. El sábado, 28 de enero, la oficina de la alcaldesa Lori E. Lightfoot, los colaboradores comunitarios y otros oficiales locales dirigirán una reunión virtual sobre la situación actual, la respuesta de la ciudad y maneras de dar apoyo. Solicite para ejercer como juez de decatlón académico

Las CPS buscan individuos interesados en ejercer como jueces para las secciones de oratoria y entrevistas de su Decatlón Académico. Este evento tendrá lugar en la Escuela Secundaria Mágnet Whitney Young (211 S. Laflin St., Chicago, IL, 60607) el sábado, 11 de febrero de 2023, de 8:00 a. m. a 12:30 p. m. Actualización sobre la Iniciativa de Rediseño de Responsabilidad de las CPS

La Iniciativa de Rediseño de Responsabilidad de las CPS es la campaña de nuestro Distrito para desarrollar un nuevo enfoque a la calidad escolar que promueve la equidad y la excelencia académica en nuestras escuelas. La iniciativa está comenzando su última fase de participación para las partes interesadas, para obtener retroalimentación antes de un voto de la Junta de Educación programado para abril de 2023. Les exhortamos a que revisen un resumen de la iniciativa (español | inglés) y regístrese aquí para recibir actualizaciones sobre cómo pueden compartir sus ideas sobre el enfoque propuesto y revisar la participación de las partes interesadas que ha ocurrido hasta ahora.

Esta primavera: oportunidades de artes visuales para los estudiantes de las CPS

¡El Departamento de Educación de Artes de las CPS se complace en anunciar tres oportunidades de artes visuales únicas para la primavera de 2023, que ocurrirán concurrentemente con nuestro festival multidisciplinario RE*VER*BER*ATE, del 27 al 30 de abril de 2023! A continuación podrá ver las directivas de inscripción para cada oportunidad y enlaces para cada uno de los portales de solicitud.

Plazo de solicitud para festival de artes multidisciplinario EXTENDIDO PARA EL 17 DE FEBRERO 

Ha comenzado el plazo de solicitud (formulario en inglés) para los ESPACIOS DE PRESENTACIÓN en el primer RE*VER*BER*ATE, un festival de artes multidisciplinario gratuito para la comunidad de las CPS que tendrá lugar en el centro de Chicago del 27 al 30 de abril de 2023. ¡Para ser considerado, envíe su propuesta de presentación aquí desde ahora hasta el 17 de febrero! 

Este evento de cuatro días está abierto a todos los estudiantes de las CPS, incluidos aquellos de las escuelas chárter, de contrato y de opciones. El evento les brindara a los estudiantes de prekínder a duodécimo grado oportunidades y talleres de presentación de espectáculos y exhibición de obras, revisiones de portafolio y talleres de audición, ferias de bellas artes y artes escénicas a nivel de escuela secundaria, y conexiones universitarias y profesionales. 

Habrá varios escenarios y espacios públicos que serán programados con la intención de brindar la más amplia variedad posible de presentaciones de los estudiantes de las CPS.
